What is Hot Foil?

Hot foil printing is widely used in the wedding stationery industry. From save-the-date cards and invitations to menus, hot foil printing adds a luxurious touch to these special occasions. The shimmering foils create a sense of glamour and elegance, setting the tone for a memorable event.

Meet the Fortune Press maestro – or as we like to call her, Flora! Our hot foil machine is specifically designed for reliability and versatility, this machine is the heartbeat of your stationery masterpiece. The secret lies in its ability to control temperature and pressure, crafting consistent, high-quality results that leave an indelible mark, whether that is with foil, a blind deboss or incredible sculptured emboss.

Hot foil printing, also known as foil stamping or foil blocking, is the process of applying a metallic or pigmented foil onto a surface using heat and pressure. The foil is placed between the die (which is essentially a metal plate) and the material to be printed, and, with the help of a hot foil machine, heat and pressure are applied to transfer the foiled design onto the chosen paper. To create the desired design, the plates are designed in-house and sent across to our wonderful plate makers who engrave plates which then come back to us for your stationery to be hand pressed.

The Process of Hot Foil

The hot foil printing process begins by preparing the material to be printed. Whether it's a wedding invitation, a book cover, or a business card, the surface must be clean and smooth for optimal foil transfer. Next, the foil colour is chosen, ranging from metallic finishes like gold and silver to vibrant pigments like red, blue, and green or even matt colours such as white.

The foil is fed into the hot foil machine, which is heated to the appropriate temperature. Once heated, the engraved plate is positioned on top of the material, and pressure is applied using the machine. The combination of heat, pressure, and time/dwell (as we call it in the business) allows the foil to adhere to the material while leaving a smooth and glossy finish.

Hot Foil Advantages

Hot foil printing offers several advantages over other printing methods. Firstly, it creates a luxurious and eye-catching effect that can elevate any design. Whether it's for wedding stationery or product packaging, hot foil printing adds a touch of elegance and enhances the overall aesthetic.

Additionally, hot foil printing is highly durable. The foils used in the process are resistant to fading, scratching, and peeling, ensuring that the design remains intact for a long time. Finally, hot foil printing allows for customisation and personalisation. With engraved plates, our couples have the freedom to create unique and intricate patterns with us that truly reflect their vision.

So what are the disadvantages?

While hot foil printing boasts unparalleled elegance, it's important to note its limitations. All plates used in this bespoke process are custom engraved, making it unsuitable for variable details such as guest names. Each detail requiring a unique plate adds an extra layer of complexity and cost, making this luxurious technique less practical for highly personalised printing.

As you embark on the journey of wedding planning, consider hot foil printing not just as a technique but as a testament to your unique love story. Let your stationery echo with the allure of handcrafted elegance, making every detail a cherished memory. Elevate your wedding stationery to an art form – timeless, sophisticated, and exclusively yours.
